The Tampa Downtown Interchange was originally designed in the early 1960’s to accommodate 60,000 vehicles per day. As part of the operational & safety improvements to the interchange, additional lanes were added to handle nearly three times the original design traffic. Reconstruction of on and off ramps were be included to eliminate dangerous weaving conditions including the replacement of the original third level flyover in the center of the interchange.

Of the 39 bridge structures found within the project limits, 26 were widened or replaced and three new bridges were added. The widening of many of the bridges required innovative structural systems to maintain the existing minimal vertical clearance over the local roads. Bridge designs were coordinated closely with traffic control plans in order to eliminate lane closures while removing deck overhangs and widening the bridges.

Additional services included traffic control plans, drainage and stormwater treatment design, noise analysis, lighting plans, design surveys geotechnical investigations, historic resource documentation and right of way mapping.

Construction was completed in December 2006 at a total cost of $82 million.
