Project Brief

The Kissimmee River Restoration Project is a Congressionally authorized undertaking shared by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). The project is to restore more than 40 square miles of the Kissimmee River floodplain ecosystem, including 43 miles of meandering river channel and 27,000 acres of wetlands. Under a contract with the SFWMD, KCA is investigating and designing flood mitigation measures for three communities that will be impacted by the proposed increase in river elevations in Pool D. Mitigation measures include structural improvements (bridges, levees, and canals) to protect impacted properties, elevating existing properties including necessary structural modifications, and any required infrastructure (water, sewer, utilities, etc.) adjustments. This project includes environmental concerns such as wetland impacts, threatened and endangered species issues, historical impacts, and also stormwater and civil site design issues. KCA is also keeping residents informed via an inclusive public involvement program that utilizes face-to-face meetings, formal presentations, and an internet web site.
